The name of the RBE10K Project is contentious as a result of the inclusion of the accronim RBE as part of the name. Since TZM and TVP have been invested for several years in the advocacy of a form of RBEM which is dissimilar than that of the RBE10K Project, should the project become popular, the variances introduced by the project to the concept of a RBE using the same name could cause confusion and adverse effects in the perception of the objectives TZM and TVP have pursued throughout the years. Considering the longer history and invested effort in promoting TVP's original form of RBE, some TZM activists consider appropriate requesting that the RBE10K Project be renamed to prevent such potential confusion and adverse effects in popular perception.

Reasons for keeping the name 'Rbe10K project' as is

The goal is to transition to an Rbe

  • The goal of the Rbe10K project is to transition to an Rbe. So it's perfectly legitimate that they use 'Rbe' in the name.
  • I think it's wrong to deny people using the name of a concept because you think they don't understand the concept.

Adverse effects in popular perception

Costs and benefits of RBE as part of The RBE10K Project's name

Positive impact for The RBE10K Project

The incluson of the accronim RBE in The RBE10K Project name makes it easy for activists of TVP and TZM to identify this project as an implementation project of an RBEM system, or at least identify the project as something they may be interested in follow-up upon. This interest is paramount for the RBE10K Project to engage a large and knoledgeable enough community capable of developing the action plan required for the implementation of the experimental settlement, and also for the engagement of the 10,000 volunteers required.

Negative impact for The RBE10K Project

Some TZM and TVP activists feel concern that the form of RBE that RBE10K Project proposes does not align with the notions of RBE/RBEM that TZM and TVP have been advocating over the years, and fear negative consequences in the perception of the public should the RBE10K project become sufficiently popular. This concern creates tension among potential supporters, who instead of contributing to the project feel compelled to insist that the name must be changed, distracting other supporters and potential supporters in engaging in debates around the subject. This costs the project valuable wasted resources that could have much greater productivity should the issue disappear.

Positive impact for the Natural environment

The inclusion of the RBE label as part of the name of the RBE10K Project maximises the engagement and interest of the whole international community of RBEM system supporters. Maximising engagment in this community also maximises the chances of developing an optimal plan of implementation, and the engagement of maximally committed volunteers for the experimental settlement. The experimental settlement, per se, has the beneficial impact of removing the environmental cost of unsustainability resulting from the average modern lifestyles of 10,000 people. The success of the experimental settlement has the potential to set in action an exponential creation of new settlements, each of which would save the environment from similar environmental costs saved by the experimental settlement, and limited only by public interest in the lifestyle offered. Considering the envisaged desirability of the lifestyle planned, the likelyhood of motivating an at least significant, and potentially overwhelming majority of people, the inclusion of an RBE label in the name of the project has the potential to achieve global or almost global sustainability in a short timeframe.

Negative impact for the Natural environment

The RBE10K Project's experimental settlement has a potential for failure. The expansion process also has a potential for failure or stallment as a result of popular disinterest in opting-out through through this system, or other problems (e.g. political persecution). The assosiation of the label RBE with the name of the project can have a negative perception in the minds of the general public, causing a rejection of the proposals of TVP and TZM, and in consequence reducing the likelyhood of causing the necessary critical mass required for the beginning of a process of gradual transformation of society towards an RBE, which has the potential to achieve global sustainability in an uncertain future.

Proposals for New Project Name

Suggestions for new names with which to identify this project can be listed here. Please follow your suggestion with a concise argument for each aspect of your suggestion. Please also offer your critiques or agreements to any already listed suggestions, or any new ideas for suggested names you may have on the discussion page here. The goal is that we may come to a consensus on a new more appropriate name for this project.

"Resource-Based Settlement Experiment (RBSE)"

  1. The word Experiment is used because, from what is written on the "RBE10K Project" wiki, that seems to be what it is, an experiment[1]. Whether it actually fully comes to fruition and continues beyond the two year mark remains to be seen. As of now, it remains as such.
  2. The word Settlement is used in place of Economy here because this project plans to create a closed, non-global settlement as clearly stated in the "project phases" section of the main "RBE10K Project" wiki page[2]. Other reasoning for this switch involves the fact that the term "Resource-Based", when followed by the word "Economy", semantically tends to imply the overlaying term "Resource-Based Economy". This term immediately implies a connection to the economic system proposed by Jacque Fresco of The Venus Project. If one were to read the clearly written literature defining such a system on the Venus Project's website [3], one would see this system is meant to be implemented on a global scale. While the term "Economy" on it's own would be appropriate because of the ability to create economic systems in any setting regardless of the size of the population, having the word "economy" succeed the words "resource-based" creates an exception that can be confusing and misleading.
  3. The number "10,000" or "10K" is deliberately not used because, even if this project currently calls for a minimum of 10,000 volunteers to host the first settlement, what happens if the number exceeds 10,000? What happens if that number falls below by a slight margin, yet the experiment is still followed through? Keeping all viable options open to bring this project to fruition, the number 10,000 seems to be too flexible a variable to include in the title of this project.
  4. Resource-Based was included, firstly, as a compromise from changing the original title in its entirety, and, secondly, because the settlement does, indeed, seek to employ the overlaying tenets of an RBE in theory, even though they may be doing so inconsistent to the manner in which the proposal exists in TVP's literature.

"Resource-Based Community Experiment (RBCE)"

  1. This title is proposed for the same reasons listed above for "Resource-Based Settlement Experiment (RBSE)" with the exception of the word "Settlement" being replaced with the word "Community".
  2. The term "community" is suggested due to the possibility of altering the project structure to include a more "open" or "mixed" model as a result of a currently ongoing "Degree of Openness of RBEM Projects" discussion. The term "community" usually refers to a social unit larger than a small village that shares common values[4] while the term "settlement" refers to a permanent or temporary community in which people live or have lived[5]. Thus, from a semantic standpoint, the term "community" implies a more open and interdependent structure than "settlement" in that participants of the project would engage in activities involved specifically with the RBCE community as well as activities of commerce and trade in the currently dominant monetary economic model without necessarily having to live in a fixed geological area.
  3. It should also be noted that ultimately deciding that the name of the project should be changed to "RBCE" will require some changes to be made in the literature on the main page of the project to elaborate on the community-based structure.

Criticism

Potential for confusion

The introduction text of this article mentions "TZM" and "TVP" makes it appear as if the matter of the name change were in any way related to TZM or TVP, which it is not necessarily the case[examples needed].

For a factual discussion of the matter of the name change, it is suggested the removal of "TZM" and "TVP" from the introduction text, because these mentions create an incorrect bias[vague].

Also, the pre-given structure of this wiki article creates a lot of bias. there are several chapters about "TZM" and "TVP", which have nothing to do with the matter of the name change[examples needed]. Other relevant points seem to be missing, such as internal links to the definitions of an RBE and sustainability.

The setup of this page is highly biased, includes things that have nothing to do with the matter[vague], and excludes things that are very relevant for the matter[examples needed].
